This is a book on local heritage that was compiled and written by an Irish Primary School. It describes an industry of National and International importance that shaped a culture and way of life in the Castlecomer area for centuries.
The book describes vividly the work of a miner, the conditions he worked in and the key role that the women played looking after the home while their fathers, husbands, brothers and sons defied nature to extract the “black gold” from the jowels of the earth.
The life stories and real experiences of men that daily diced with death are recorded in clear detail and show the reader that the Miners were truly – a Rare Breed-
