On Wednesday 13th February there was great excitement when members of the Garda Mounted Unit visited the school with their horses. The Gardaí also spoke with the pupils about cyber bullying and internet safety. Great courtesy and kindness was shown to all pupils and staff by the Gardaí and everyone got to interact with the horses.
On Tuesday 5th February, Michele Castiaux, a Heritage Specialist visited the school to hold workshops with the children. Michele is a Belgian Geologist and Environmentalist Scientist (MSc.) based in Portlaoise. As part of these workshops a ‘Rock Clinic’ was held, where the children brought in rocks which were identified with the help of Michele. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the visit.
Having being victorious in the Schools County Finals, Holly (u-13 40 x 20 Girls Singles) and Eoin (u-11 40 x 20 Boys Singles) progressed to the Leinster Finals. Eoin competed and won on the 4th February going on to the All Ireland in Cavan on 2nd March. Holly got to the semi final where she was narrowly beaten by a competitor from Carlow. Well Done to you both.
Congratulations to 6th Class pupil Bobby on his wonderful victory together with Katie Brennan (Moneenroe) in the Gael Linn u-13 Mixed Doubles 40 x 20 All Ireland Final. The pair travelled toCork on Sunday 27th January to compete and bring home the spoils. Well Done Bobby! All in Firoda N.S. are very proud of your achievement.
The local Credit Union held its annual Schools Quiz on Friday February 1st. We had four teams representing the school. Congratulations to our u-13 team who took 1st place ahead of Coon N.S and Moneenroe. On that winning team was Adam, Leo, Will and Jack. They now proceed to the Regional Final which will be held on March 3rd. Well Done to you all!
