Pancake Tuesday

Tuesday the 9th. of February was Pancake or “Shrove” Tuesday. It was the last day before “Lent” when Christians traditionally have some form of feast before they embark on 40 days of fasting commencing on “Ash Wednesday”. Lent is a preparation period for Easter and Christians follow the example of Jesus when he fasted for 40 days in the desert. Many children give up sweets, sugar, chocolate etc. However, some people, instead of fasting or giving up treats actually take up some good deeds for the duration such as visiting the sick and elderly. We celebrated Pancake Tuesday in Firoda N.S. by having a feast of pancakes. This is a tradition started by Miss Fogarty many years ago. Every year with the assistance of her aunt Mrs. Betty Owens she has made pancakes for all the children. Since Miss Fogarty retired at Christmas we were worried that the tradition was over so we were delighted on Tuesday to see Miss drive in to the school yard with “Auntie Betty” equipped with skillet, eggs, flour and milk. A great day was had by all. Thank you.

Our Photo shows Mrs. Owens flipping a pancake carefully watched by her daughter Deeirdre who is helping to carry on the tradition.
